The Rotary Club of Slippery Rock

The Rotary Club of Slippery Rock is a proud part of both our local community and Rotary International — a global network of more than 1.2 million members who believe that great things happen when dedicated minds come together. Rotarians are business and community leaders representing different professions, experiences, and perspectives — every member is united by a shared desire to serve together and address challenges affecting our local community and communities around the world.

About Slippery Rock Rotary

The Slippery Rock Rotary was founded and organized by the Butler PM Club and chartered by Rotary International in 1937 as Club #5163 in District 7280. We are members of a global organization of business and professional leaders dedicated to providing humanitarian service, building goodwill and promoting peace throughout the world. There are 1.2 million Rotarians in more than 35,000 clubs across 200 countries. Our Slippery Rock organization consists of 40 members from a variety of professions and disciplines throughout the community, plus the Harrisville Satellite Rotary Club and Rotaract students at Slippery Rock University.

Rotary Programs

purse1

In recent years, Rotarians have contributed $10,000 –$25,000 for charitable activities throughout the area.. Our club has hosted Village Fest events, purse bingos, shoe drives and chili cook-offs to raise these monies.

We send one or more high school students every year to:

  • Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
  • Rotary Vocational Awards (ROVA)
  • Support camps
  • High School Scholarships.

Our organization also supports college-level students through Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships, youth exchange students and Rotaract at Slippery Rock University. We have had team leaders participate in Rotary International (RI) Group Study Exchanges and have hosted a number of international exchange students.

The club has presented numerous Walwik Distinguished Community Service Awards that recognize an area resident and non-Rotarian who exemplifies Slippery Rock Rotary’s vision of community service. This recognition includes the Paul Harris Fellowship, for which the club makes a $1,000 donation to Rotary International’s Annual Fund in their names. Slippery Rock native John Greaves is the 2026 winner of the Walwik Community Service Award.

The Rotary Foundation

The The Rotary Foundation enables Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through health, education, and alleviation of poverty. The Foundation is not-for-profit and is supported solely through contributions. The Foundation provides humanitarian services through grants and funding for programs including:

  • Polio Plus
  • Polio Eradication
  • Public Sector Advocacy
  • Humanitarian Programs
  • Hunger and Humanity Grants
  • Volunteer Grants
  • Ambassadorial Scholarships
  • Centers for International Studies
  • Grants for Teachers
  • Peace Clubs.

The Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The motto has been translated into more than 100 languages and Rotarians recite it at club meetings. And the Slippery Rock Club has added an unofficial fifth test, “Is it fun?”

Ode to a Rotarian

paul carolyn

The launch of the brand new website for the Rotary Club of Slippery Rock, the Harrisville Satellite and SRU Rotaract is being dedicated to the memory of fellow Rotarian and Past District Governor Paul Rizza.  For many years, Paul and his wife Carolyn were the heart and soul of the Slippery Rock Rotary, and it is only fitting to dedicate this new site to Paul for his countless contributions to both our local organization as well Rotary International.  To do so, we are reprinting a letter President Brad Smith received from Rotary International District 2485 Albania-Kosova shortly after Paul’s passing this April since it really defines the essence of Paul Rizza and the true meaning of “Service above Self.”  At the end of the letter is a video montage honoring his memory.
